Fall is Starting to Show…

I had an extremely long and boring day today, putting together a large work project in collab with a large organization. Due to that, I bring you, all about yesterday. Because I think that still matters…

While the kids were having their lunch today I popped over to the local Amish store, Rentown, to purchase a few things. It is so nice to pop out and leave my kids. I don’t have to worry about them choking on grapes or hunting for poisonous chemicals to drink from underneath the sink. You know, all of the super scary things you envision your children doing the second they are out of your line of vision when they are younger. So as sad as it is to not have little babies around, the ability to pop out is very nice.

Rentown is known for their baked goods and their cheese selection. All things I am a fan of. I was on the hunt for some cornmeal breading for the perch I bought this weekend. They had muenster cheese and colby-jack on clearance for $2.29/pound which was a pretty great deal!

While I was there I couldn’t help but notice that the beauty of fall was creeping in. Large crates of local apples floated amidst the center of the store. And the store highlighted some autumn flavors with a sweet end cap display that was too tempting and I ended up leaving with a bag of harvest mix…for the kids! Although I do allow myself one pumpkin, one brown corn, and one white corn. They had some candy flavors and gummy shapes that I had never heard of before that sounded so interesting and intriguing.

If you’ve never been to Rentown and you are local to the Northern Indiana/Southern Michigan area, I highly recommend you visit. It is the most scenic drive to get there. With long tree shaded drives next to idyllic barns, swings inviting in the front yard, and cows meandering next to the side of the road, it definitely makes me feel at peace after the drive out to the shop.

Not only are they a grocery store but it is also very much a general store. Whether a broom, cooking utensils, toys, games, or pots and pans, you can find a lot of things there. Some of my favorites include fun silicone cooking utensils that I have bought tons of. I love how fun the colors and the confetti design is and they work great with my enameled cast iron which I can’t use metal utensils with. They also have a lot of fun cooking gadgets and sweet things that inspire me to bake more. I had my eye on their rolling pins but considering I have about 10, I don’t think I need anymore.

They also have a large selection of games, puzzles, and toys. A lot of the toys are old -fashioned ones that are hard to find in other places. I love that it has a true general store kind of vibe going on. I love these white mountain puzzles and they have a pretty large selection with some of them that I had never even seen before. I had to buy myself the seal bathtub toy because it was just too cute to resist.

Here are some other signs of fall I spotted as I was getting in to line to check out. I just love the quirkiness of all of the pumpkins and squash.

I haven’t figured out what I am doing with the whole mum/pumpkin scene this year, have you? Some years I’ve had just a few, others I’ve tried to have this massive, spillover look. Last year we had just moved into the house and we were juggling the fun of owning three houses and so that kind of meant I was overwhelmed to say the least! While I would like to have a really big look on our really big porch I also remember adding up the cost and how it was going to be an astronomical amount to do the whole giant amass of pumpkins spilling down the giant staircase look.

The rest of the day went by pretty much without a hitch. For dinner I did fry that perch along with some parmesan crusted zucchini and we had homegrown, sliced tomatoes. It was a great dinner. In the evening Nick and I went to play pickleball and as we were walking by a neighbor’s house I was stopped by how amazing their hydrangeas looked. They are such a pop of colors swirling together, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything quite so pretty.

As I get ready to go to bed here, I hope you are all blessed. Writing again has been so cathartic for me. Some days I feel like telling you about my days, other days I feel like writing about travel or recipes or whatever! I hope you’ll stick around because I’m just having a really great time.

Love to you all. Look for those hydrangeas <3
